Vice Minister of Culture Zhou Heping got from a professor in northeast China that South Korea planned to apply to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to list its version of the Dragon Boat Festival as an intangible cultural property.
Chinese folklorists and ordinary citizens alike were concerned.
"How embarrassed we will feel if a foreign country lists the festival as its own cultural property. The Dragon Boat Festival has been celebrated in China for more than 2,500 years," said Zhou.

Afternote: South Korea succeeded in adding the Dragon Boat Festival, a celebration used to commemorate Qu Yuan, a Chinese patriot in olden times, onto the World Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2005.
